Submeters allow you to organize meters in a hierarchical parent-child structure. This option is located on the meter detail page under the Submeters section.
With submeters, you can structure consumption by location, tenant, department, or equipment, while maintaining a master or total measurement via a parent meter. This is important for insight, reporting, and analysis of consumption, without having to physically combine meters.
Overview
The Submeters section shows all meters that are linked as child meters to the current meter (the parent).
The information displayed depends on:
Whether the meter actually has submeters
The status of the connected meters
The user's rights
Please note: the hierarchy is organizational and has no automatic impact on consumption calculations or billing.
Layout
Submeter list
Each row in the list represents one submeter and contains:
Serial number
Clickable
Opens the submeter detail page
Status
Current status of the submeter (e.g. Installed, Inactive, Removed)
Model
Name of the meter model
Payment reference
The External Reference assigned to the submeter
Optional field, used for identification (e.g. floor, tenant, unit number)
Empty status
When a meter has no submeters, the message is displayed:
“No submeters found”
Actions
Add submeter
Open the meter details page of the parent meter
Go to the Submeters section
Click on Add Submeter
Select the meter you want to connect
Optionally enter an External reference
Click Add
Limits:
A meter cannot be linked to itself
Each submeter can only have one parent
Remove (disconnect) submeter
Open the meter details page of the parent meter
Select one or more submeters
Click on Disconnect Submeter
Confirm the action
Important:
Disconnecting only removes the relationship, not the meter.
Historical data is fully preserved
Navigate to a submeter
Click on the serial number of the submeter
You open the details page of that meter
A submeter can also have its own submeters
Behaviors & Logic
Parent-child relationships
One parent meter can have multiple submeters
Each submeter has exactly one parent
There is no maximum depth for the hierarchy
Consumption registration
Consumption is recorded separately per meter
The system does not automatically add submeter consumption to the parent
Example:
Parent meter: 1000 kWh
Submeters: 400 kWh + 500 kWh
Difference (100 kWh) may indicate loss, timing differences or unmetered consumption
Aggregation requires reporting or analysis tools.
Problem | Solution |
Submeters are missing | Check if they are linked and refresh the page |
Total consumption is incorrect | Consumption is not automatically aggregated |
Submeter cannot be added | Check rights and prepayment restrictions |
Submeter not visible | Check status and whether you are on the correct parent |
Incorrect hierarchy | Disconnect and reconnect to the correct parent |
Can a meter have multiple parents?
No, each meter can only have one parent.
Is the total consumption calculated automatically?
No, aggregation does not happen automatically.
What happens to historical data when you disconnect?
This will be fully preserved.
Can a submeter also have submeters itself?
Yes, multi-level hierarchies are allowed.
What is the External Reference for?
For recognition, such as tenant, floor or unit.
Can I change the parent meter?
Yes, by first unpairing and then pairing again.
Should units be equal?
Not required, but recommended for comparisons.
What happens if I delete a parent meter?
Submeters will continue to exist but will lose their parent relationship.
Can I add multiple submeters at once?
No, adding is done one at a time. Unlinking can be done in bulk.
Is the hierarchy used in invoicing?
No, billing is based on individual meters.
Parent meter – Meter that has one or more submeters
Submeter – Meter that is linked to a parent meter
External Reference – Optional identification of a submeter
Meter Hierarchy – Structure of parent and child meters
Unlink – Remove the parent-child relationship
Aggregation – Addition of consumption values (not automatic)
