When a location consumes electricity and also sends it back to the grid, 2 channels measure in opposite directions. You can now set a direction on a consumption billing item to match the channel's direction.
This helps you review billing periods and prepare invoices using the measurements that belong to each charge.
The Direction field offers these choices:
Leave empty - The billing item uses both off-take and injection.
Off-take - The billing item only bills an electricity channel with direction off-take.
Injection - The billing item only bills electricity supplied to the grid, such as solar generation.
Which readings should a billing item use?
When configuring a consumption billing item, you can leave Direction empty or select one of the available directions:
Leave it empty to use the billing item for both off-take and injection. This is the right choice when the charge does not need to distinguish between them.
Select Off-take to only bill an electricity channel with direction off-take.
Select Injection to only bill electricity supplied to the grid, such as solar generation sent back to the grid.
Use separate billing items when you need to bill imported and exported electricity independently. Even when the items use the same unit and metering type, their quantities and estimates remain separate.
Review billing insights with the right data
Billing insights now matches measurements to the selected direction. For example, an item set to Injection uses injection readings instead of off-take readings. This means a billing period with valid injection data can be completed and invoiced without waiting for unrelated off-take data.
When new readings are received or recalculated, the relevant billing periods are updated automatically according to the direction selected on their consumption billing items.
⚠️ An item set to Injection intentionally uses only injection readings. If an item should use both directions, leave Direction empty.
Validation of injection readings
Negative values are normal for some injection readings and are no longer treated as negative consumption. Your organization can optionally validate that injection readings are positive when that matches its metering conventions.
Problem | Solution |
My injection item no longer shows off-take readings. | This is intended: an item set to Injection only uses injection readings. Leave Direction empty if the item should use both directions. |
Imported and exported electricity appear together on one invoice line. | Create separate billing items, one with direction Off-take and one with direction Injection. |
A billing period with injection readings is not completed. | Check that the consumption billing item has direction Injection, so the right readings are used. |
Do I need to update existing consumption billing items?
No. Items without a direction keep their current behavior and match both directions.
When should I create separate items for off-take and injection?
Create separate items when imported and exported electricity need different charges, quantities, or estimates.
Why does my injection item no longer show off-take readings?
An item set to Injection intentionally uses only injection readings. Leave Direction empty when the item should use both.
Can I invoice a period that contains injection readings?
Yes. When the required injection readings are available, billing insights can use them to complete the period and support invoicing.
