Estimated measurements

Overview

Estimated measurements help you continue billing when a meter reading is missing at the end of a billing period. Instead of blocking invoicing or requiring manual work first, the platform can automatically create an estimated end measurement.

To keep the source of each measurement clear and traceable, the measurement origin is shown on the invoice, so teams and customers can immediately see when a value is estimated.

Estimated measurements consist of 3 parts:

  1. Automatic estimations – the platform automatically creates an estimated end measurement when one is missing

  2. Manual estimations – a user decides during invoicing to use an estimated measurement

  3. Reviewing invoices with estimations – use a filter in the invoice list to quickly find all invoices with an estimated measurement

Automatic estimations

With automatic estimations, the platform creates an estimated end measurement automatically when the end measurement is missing. Configure this via Config > Billing > Estimated measurements.

There are two settings:

  • Automatically add estimated measurements – enables or disables the automatic creation of an estimated measurement.

  • Delay – the number of days after the billing period end date before the estimated measurement is added.

⚠️ If the delay is set to 5 days, the platform waits 5 days after the billing period end date. If the end measurement is still missing after that time, an estimated end measurement is added automatically and a draft invoice is created.

Manual estimations

Manual estimations let a user decide to use an estimated measurement when an end measurement is missing. This is available in two places:

Add measurement via Billing Insights

In Billing Insights, when a measurement is missing, you can add an estimated measurement using the Add measurement button. A proposed estimation will be pre-filled in the dialog for you to confirm.

Create invoice via the Not Billed overview

The Not Billed overview shows all billing periods that still need input. If one or more end measurements are missing, you can select multiple periods and use Create invoice to process them at once. The platform will use an estimation for any missing end measurement.

Reviewing invoices with estimated measurements

After invoices are created, you can easily find all invoices that contain an estimated measurement.

  • Go to the invoice list.

  • Open the filters and toggle Only with estimated measurements.

  • The list will now show only invoices with an estimated measurement.

Problem

Solution

The automatic estimation is not being created.

Check that Automatically add estimated measurements is enabled in Config > Billing > Estimated measurements. Also check that the configured delay has passed.

I don't see the estimated measurement option when creating an invoice.

This option only appears when an end measurement is missing for the selected billing period.

I want to see which invoices contain an estimated measurement.

Use the Only with estimated measurements filter in the invoice list.

FAQ

Does this mean all missing meter data is estimated automatically?
No. This only covers creating an estimated end measurement when it is missing at the end of a billing period. Automatic creation only happens when automatic estimations are enabled and the configured delay has passed.

Can the start measurement also be estimated?
The estimation only applies to the end measurement. However, since an end measurement is often the start measurement for the next period, a billing period may sometimes contain two estimated measurements.

Can users add an estimated measurement themselves?
Yes. In Billing Insights, when creating an invoice, users can select Use an estimated measurement. The platform will then calculate an estimation for the end date.

How reliable is an estimated measurement?
Estimated measurements are not random fallback values. They follow the same logic as the estimated consumption used elsewhere in the platform. For more detail, see the article on estimated consumption.

Who benefits most from this feature?
This is especially useful for billing and operations teams who need to keep invoice runs on track even when meter input is incomplete at period close. Invoices can still be sent out and corrected afterwards if needed.
